fMRI doesn't see neurons — it sees blood. A burst of activity is blurred by the sluggish hemodynamic response function (HRF): the measured BOLD signal is the neural event train convolved with the HRF, plus noise. Left: build BOLD from events. Right: try to invert it — and feel why deconvolution is so fragile once noise is in.fMRI는 뉴런이 아니라 혈류를 봅니다.
Each neural event triggers the same slow HRF — rise to a peak near 5 s, then a dip. The BOLD signal y = x ⊛ h smears sharp events across ~20 s, so nearby events overlap and merge.
Undoing the blur means dividing by the HRF spectrum ĥ(f), which is tiny at high frequencies. Any noise there blows up. Regularization x̂ = ĥ*ŷ / (|ĥ|²+λ) trades ringing against lost detail — there is no free lunch.
Recovering neural timing from BOLD underlies event-related fMRI and effective-connectivity models. Its fragility is exactly why PRISM leans on priors and representation learning rather than naïve inversion.BOLD로부터 신경 활동의 타이밍을 복원하는 일은 event-related fMRI와 유효 연결성(effective-connectivity) 모델의 바탕이 됩니다.
